ABOUT ABOUT

Join the Friends of Fort Hunter in a virtual illustrated talk with David Biser, first person interpreter of John Harris Jr., the official founder of the city of Harrisburg and of Dauphin County Pennsylvania.

John Harris lived from 1727-1791 and was an influential figure during the French and Indian War as well as the American Revolution.  He also operated a tavern, had a license to trade with the natives, owned a system of ferry boats for crossing the Susquehanna River, was a trader of goods, a brewer and an entrepreneur, and is best known for the founding of Dauphin County and the city of Harrisburg as the county seat.  Harris was a pivotal character in the life of the colony/state of Pennsylvania.  He dreamed that one day the capital of the state of Pennsylvania might move inland to Harrisburg.
